چکیده

We define a volume limited sample of over 14,000 early-type galaxies (ETGs) selected from data release six of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The density of environment of each galaxy is robustly measured. By comparing narrow band spectral line indices with recent models of simple stellar populations (SSPs) we investigate trends in the star formation history as a function of galaxy mass (velocity dispersion), density of environment and galactic radius. We find that age, metallicity and α-enhancement all increase with galaxy mass and that field ETGs are younger than their cluster counterparts by ∼ 2 Gyr. We find negative radial metallicity gradients for all masses and environments, and positive radial age gradients for ETGs with velocity dispersion over 180 kms−1. Our results are qualitatively consistent with a relatively simple picture for ETG evolution in which the low-mass halos accreted by a proto-ETG contained not only gas but also a stellar population. This fossil population is preferentially found at large radii in massive ETGs because the stellar accretions were dissipationless. We estimate that the typical, massive ETG should have been assembled at z . 3.5. The process is similar in the cluster and the field but occurred earlier in dense environments.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Galex Uv Color-magnitude Relations and Evidence for Recent Star Formation in Early-type Galaxies

We have used the GALEX UV photometric data to construct a first near-ultraviolet (NUV) colormagnitude relation (CMR) for the galaxies pre-classified as early-type by SDSS studies. The NUV CMR is a powerful tool for tracking the recent star formation history in early-type galaxies, owing to its high sensitivity to the presence of young stellar populations. Our NUV CMR for UV-weak galaxies shows ...

ar X iv : a st ro - p h / 04 08 02 3 v 2 2 5 A ug 2 00 4 Galaxy Assembly By Eric

In a ΛCDM Universe, galaxies grow in mass both through star formation and through addition of already-formed stars in galaxy mergers. Because of this partial decoupling of these two modes of galaxy growth, I discuss each separately in this biased and incomplete review of galaxy assembly; first giving an overview of the cosmic-averaged star formation history, and then moving on to discuss the im...

How Young Are Early-type Cluster Galaxies ? Quantifying the Young Stellar Component in a Rich Cluster

We present a new method of quantifying the mass fraction of young stars in galaxies by analyzing nearultraviolet (NUV)−optical colors. We focus our attention on early-type cluster galaxies, whose star formation history is at present undetermined. Rest frame NUV (F300W) and optical (F702W) images of cluster Abell 851 (z = 0.41) using HST/WFPC2 allow us to determine a NUV−optical color-magnitude ...

IMF variations and their implications for Supernovae numbers

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) integrated over an entire galaxy is an integral over all separate star-formation events. Since most stars form in star clusters with different masses the integrated IMF becomes an integral of the (universal or invariant) canonical stellar IMF over the star-cluster mass function. This integrated IMF is steeper (contains fewer massive stars per Gtype star) ...
